Scope

Expanding Flexibly

LifeArc, a leading medical research charity, needed to accommodate expanding teams by taking an additional floor within their existing building. The space would be used for around two years, so the organisation needed a solution that matched the comfort and functionality of their main offices — without the cost or carbon footprint of purchasing a full suite of new furniture.

After exploring rental options and finding them commercially unviable for the timeframe, LifeArc asked Fluid to develop a more sustainable, cost effective approach that still upheld their ergonomic and aesthetic standards.

Sustainability + Standards

Fluid created a blended procurement strategy that combined high quality second hand furniture with carefully selected new items where reuse wasn’t practical. Through our supplier network, we sourced premium used Knoll sit stand workstations and Vitra task chairs — chosen for durability, ergonomics and long lifespan.

These were complemented by new Calma office pods for focus and collaboration, new meeting and breakout furniture, a modern locker system and Humanscale monitor arms. The result was a cohesive, high performing environment that aligned seamlessly with LifeArc’s existing workspace while significantly reducing embodied carbon.

Cost-efficient Circularity

Fluid managed all procurement, logistics and installation, coordinating closely with LifeArc’s internal team to deliver the project efficiently and on schedule.

By reusing high quality furniture and limiting new manufacture to essential items, the project achieved a £146,375 net saving compared to a fully new specification and avoided 32.6 tonnes of CO₂e — equivalent to planting 1,467 trees or taking 7.2 UK homes off the grid for a year.

The temporary floor now provides a comfortable, functional workspace that supports productivity and wellbeing, delivered through a circular, cost efficient strategy.
